You might’ve noticed some changes around here, so we wanted to take a moment and share a bit of what we’ve been up to.
Back in 2017, when SUPPLY UNICA was just starting out, we wanted to establish an online destination for customers to shop for handmade ceramics. We aimed to support makers through an accessible digital platform, where we provided services to make both buying and selling online easier. We wanted more people to enjoy the work the same way we did.
Many of the makers we collaborated with debuted entire collections of work. And those collections often carried stories that drew us in. After all, it’s those stories that make handmade work unique.
Over the next year, we naturally spent more time thinking about and sharing those stories. They inspired our work, encouraged our mission, and consumed our fascination. And as a result of their impact on us, we decided to produce UNICA.
UNICA is a publication that shares stories about how handmade ceramics influence the world around us.
Issue 1 launched in January 2019 and included the stories of 7 makers from around the world. With the support of our Kickstarter supporters, we had the pleasure of sharing the stories of Wynne Noble, Fernando Aciar, Stephanie Shih, James Rivas, Anna Crooks, Gina Tibbott, and Guilia Bonora. We celebrated the Issue with a launch party and distributed the publication in bookstores across the US.
That was a whirlwind of an experience, and one of our favorite chapters of SUPPLY UNICA. We heard from readers about the impact these stories had on their personal lives and creative practices, and we were hooked. We wanted more people to have access to these stories.
That’s when it clicked. We knew what had to come next for us as we head into year 3, and it’s all based on a firmer conviction in the storytelling of handmade craft. So, we spent the last few months honing our team’s mission:
Starting today, our site will focus on sharing more stories, and you can expect to find a regular cadence of content on a monthly basis. We hope the site will become a destination for makers and readers alike to connect to one another and find inspiration. You can find these in the “Stories” link of our navigation or sign up for our newsletter to receive updates when available.
You’ll have the opportunity to purchase work from collections that accompany stories from makers on either their Maker profile or at the bottom of related Stories. As always, sales will directly support the maker.
For UNICA, Issue 2 is currently in the works, and we’re exploring mediums that will provide broader access for everybody.
As we embark on this next chapter of SUPPLY UNICA, we can use all the help we can get. If our mission resonates with you and you’d like to get involved, please don’t hesitate to reach out at firstname.lastname@example.org or on our Instagram @supplyunica. And as always, any feedback and ideas are always appreciated.
